Using Up Ingredients


I'm generally not in favour of recipes that call for "half a can" of something, or "2 Tbsp chopped" vegetable, because it means when the recipe has been made, I have the rest of that item left over, to either throw away or find a use for.  Unfortunately, sometimes there just isn't another way to make the recipe work in a kitchen that serves fewer people.

For ingredients like onion and garlic, it's fairly easy to get around by keeping a bag of frozen chopped onion in the freezer and a jar of chopped or minced garlic in the fridge.  For other ingredients it's not so simple, and we abhor food waste.  When I'm planning my weekly menu and making my shopping list, I take that into account, but I know not everyone shops the way I do.  This page, therefore, is to help figure out what to do with "the rest" of various ingredients that are sold larger than they're used.  Ingredients are listed alphabetically, with links to recipes from this blog that call for them.
